TURKEY:
Global Partners Study-Abroad in Turkey (fall)
The unique location of Turkey makes it the crossroads of Europe,
Asia, and the Middle East, where Eastern and Western elements are
blended to create an exciting culture unlike any other. The Global
Partners Program begins in Istanbul, one of the world's most cosmopolitan
cities offering a rich historical heritage from the ancient, byzantine,
and Ottoman periods. During three weeks in the city, students begin
the study of Turkish language and take a core course on Turkish
history, politics, economics, and religion. The initial period in
Istanbul is followed by a nine-day field study trip in western Turkey
to major sites such as Gallipoli, Troy, Sardis, Izmir, Ephesos,
and Gordion. The second phase of the program is based in Ankara,
the Turkish capital and gateway to the rich and diverse cultures
of Central Anatolia; Turkish language and core courses continue
while students choose three additional courses from the offerings
at Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University. Both
universities conduct their courses in English, have outstanding
libraries and computer centers. They offer courses in art, economics,
education, social sciences, humanities, music and performing arts
and science. While in Istanbul, students are housed on campus at
Istanbul Technical University in the heart of Istanbul, and in Ankara
they also live in university dormitories. Eligibility: Relevant
course work in anthropology, classics, and/or religious studies
highly recommended.
