ISRAEL
and THE WEST BANK: Great Lakes Jerusalem Program
This intense academic and experiential program, sponsored by the
Great Lakes College Association, focuses on the cultures and conflicts
of two peoples who claim the same land. Working out of the city
of Jerusalem, the program draws upon the resources of the city as
well as upon Israeli and Palestinian leaders and educators throughout
Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. A two-day orientation
at Earlham College is required before departure. Courses offered
on site include Current Issues in Israeli-Palestinian Relations,
a capstone course providing a forum for a range of speakers from
the two communities to discuss possible solutions to the conflict.
Other courses offered by Palestinian and Israeli faculty are: Contemporary
Israeli Society, and Politics, History of Zionism, Contemporary
Palestinian Society and Politics, and the Historical Geography of
Palestine. Students also study introductory Hebrew and Arabic. The
experiential component of the program provides students with opportunities
for various volunteer activities in the communities being studied,
including working on a Kibbutz or a farm on the West Bank. The entire
group is housed together in a group living arrangement. Eligibility:
Middle Eastern Studies strongly recommended.
