AUSTRIA:
Vienna
The IES Vienna Program is especially recommended for music performance
majors and talented instrumentalists and vocalists who have taken
at least two semesters of college-level German. Music students may
audition for master classes and individual instruction at the Konservatorium
der Stadt Wien, which offers concentrations in keyboard, strings,
wood-wind, percussion, and voice. Auditions are also held for the
conservatory orchestra as well as choral and recital groups. Selection
for master classes and individual instruction is competitive, but
for students not accepted at the conservatory, individual instruction
is made available on a subsidized basis at the IES Performance Workshop.
In addition to courses in music, IES offers classes in intensive
German language and an extensive curriculum in the anthropology,
art history, literature, economics, political science, psychology
and international relations with a special emphasis on Central and
Eastern Europe. Most courses are taught in English, but German-taught
courses are available in Austrian studies, history, literature and
theater, and political science. Advanced level students may enroll
in courses at the University of Vienna in a number of disciplines.
IES offers internships in non-profit organizations, political parties,
businesses, and teaching in Viennese secondary schools. Major week-long
field trips are provided to Cracow, Budapest and Breslau (fall))
and Berlin, Dresden and Hamburg (spring) in addition to a number
of shorter excursions within Austria. Each semester selected students
studying the European Union may participate in the Model European
Union, which has been held in both Freiburg and London. Spring semester
students studying drama may participate in the International Drama
Festival scheduled at one of the other IES Centers in Europe, such
as Paris. Housing is provided in private residences with IES roommates.
Eligibility: Minimum of two semesters of German. If music student:
advanced performance classes.
