TOULOUSE:
Dickinson in France
The Dickinson College in France program offers a combination of
courses from various institutions in Toulouse designed to integrate
the study of language, literature and civilization. Students may
enroll in specially designed courses at the Dickinson Study Center
as well as in classes offered by the University of Toulouse, the
Institut Catholique and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques. Musicians
and studio artists have the opportunity to study at the Conservatoire
de Toulouse and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. The Dickinson Study Center,
a facility owned and operated by the program itself, offers intensive
courses in French language and culture studies whereas content courses
in various disciplines are taken at French institutions throughout
the city. At the University of Toulouse, students may study French
literature, art history, music, theatre, political science, economics,
sociology, and women's studies while the Institut Catholique offers
courses in history, religion, and philosophy. Studio art classes
are available at the Ecole des Beaux Arts as well as internships
in the arts at museums located in the city. The Institut d'Etudes
Politiques provides advanced level students of French having a background
in political science with the opportunity to enroll in advanced
courses in politics and economics. Extensive research facilities
are open to students at a number of libraries, institutes, archives
and centers throughout the city covering such subjects as environmental
sciences, women's studies, and human rights. The program provides
internships in such areas as secondary education, public administration,
museum work, archeology, theatre, the applied sciences and medicine.
Regular excursions are planned to sites in the surrounding area
and two major field trips to Paris and such areas as Provence and
the Dordogne. Students are housed in homestays with carefully selected
host families with whom they have seven breakfasts and two full
meals per week. Eligibility: fifth semester level in French, including
one course in literary analysis (French 312 or 313).
