SEVILLE:
Council on International Educational Exchange
The Council on International Educational Exchange in Seville is
located on the campus of the Universidad de Sevilla, located in
the center of the city. After a two-day orientation session during
which students are introduced to the country, culture, and academic
program, students begin the academic phase of the program consisting
of two cycles. During Cycle I, which runs through September in the
fall and January in the spring, participants take one intensive
course from a choice of several fields and may also be enrolled
in intensive language training. During Cycle II, which runs to the
end of the semester, students enroll in five courses chosen from
Council Study Center Courses, open only to American students, University
of Seville Cursos para Extranjeros for international students, and/or
regular University of Seville courses with Spanish students. All
courses are taught in Spanish and placement depends of the student's
language proficiency. Council Study Center Courses are numerous
and cover a wide range of fields including advanced language study,
literature, political science, history, international relations,
art history, and women's studies. The list of Cursos para Extranjeros,
offered by the university itself for international students, is
extensive and includes both advanced Spanish and a broad-ranging
selection in literature, theatre, cinema, geography, anthropology,
history, archeology, political science, and the history of art.
It is recommended that students take regular Universidad de Sevilla
courses only in their major or a field in which they have had substantial
coursework. A full complement of additional advanced classes is
offered in a wide variety of fields. Tutorials are provided for
selected regular university courses to provide assistance in understanding
the material covered in class. Students should plan to take regular
university classes only in the spring semester since the final examination
period in the fall is scheduled in mid to late January, which would
overlap the beginning of the semester at Grinnell. Independent studies
can also be organized for students upon request. Internship opportunities
exist in high schools in conjunction with an associated course in
teaching English as a second language. Council also provides volunteer
opportunities to work with religious, social and political organizations.
Field trips and excursions are provided to sites of interest in
Seville and the Andalucian region. Housing is provided in homestays
or boarding houses. Eligibility: Third-year Spanish, including Spanish
238 and 239.
