ROME:
Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome
The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, administered
by Duke University, involves a consortium of ten American colleges
and universities and provides students with an opportunity in Rome
to study ancient history, archeology, Greek and Latin literature,
and ancient art. ICCS has received generous support from the Danforth
Foundation, the Old Dominion Foundation, the Mellon Foundation,
and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, among others. The
faculty is chosen from persons teaching classics, history, and art
history in the U.S. and Canada as well as from academics resident
in Italy, who teach art history and Italian language. Students normally
take four courses including a required comprehensive and integrated
course entitled "The Ancient City," which is the equivalent of two
semester courses. This course covers Roman archaeology and topography,
aspects of social and urban history of Rome and Roman civilization.
Frequent site visits, museum tours, lectures, and field trips outside
of Rome, to such areas as Campania, Etruria, and Sicily are included
as part of the course. The remaining two courses are chosen from;
Intermediate or Advanced Latin, Intermediate or Advanced Greek,
Renaissance and Baroque Art History, or Elementary Italian. Housing
is provided in the ICCS center itself, containing shared rooms,
classrooms, library, dining rooms and kitchen. Eligibility: Major
in classics or art history with strong classical interests. Strong
Roman History background either through coursework or independent
reading. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
