PARIS:
Vassar-Wesleyan Program in Paris
The Vassar-Wesleyan Program in Paris is an academically intensive
program featuring a combination of courses specifically designed
for American students taught by French faculty and, during the spring
semester, courses offered by the University of Paris (branches VII
and XII). Students take four courses per semester in addition to
a required writing workshop, which provides an introduction to the
organization and style of written assignments in France. The other
four courses are chosen by students from a selection offered at
Reid Hall, the program site, and the University of Paris. (Students
normally may not take university courses during the fall because
the French academic year does not start until late in the semester.)
Offerings at Reid Hall and the University of Paris include courses
in: classical French theater, the novel, women' studies, history
and art history, sociology, political science, philosophy, architecture,
and cinema. Additional after–class discussion sessions are provided
to aid students in mastering class material. Internships are available
in French secondary schools, working with English teachers in conducting
small conversation groups. The program organizes numerous guided
visits to important monuments of French culture, museums, and locations
that help students understand the working realities of everyday
France. Field trips start with the orientation session at the beginning
and continue throughout the semester with excursions outside of
Paris to places such at Chartres, Versailles, and the chateaux of
the Loire Valley. Opportunities are provided to meet French young
people and to participate in cultural, social, and sports activities
in Paris. Accommodation is provided in homestays or in au au pair
positions. Eligibility: Minimum 3.0 GPA. Fifth-semester level of
French. Recommendation of French Department.
