GERMANY: Munich - Wayne State University (spring recommended)

The Wayne State University Munich program is affiliated with the Ludwig-Maximilians University, one of the oldest and largest in Germany, enrolling more than 61,000 students. Program participants are directly enrolled in the university and have access to the full range of university courses in the arts and sciences, including language and literature studies, history and history of art, cultural studies, psychology, education, philosophy of science, and social sciences. The Wayne State program facility is located on the edge of the university campus and provides courses specially designed for American students as well as the support needed for academic success in regular university courses. The courses offered by the program itself include classes in German language and literature, theater, film, intellectual intellectual history, and European history. All students are required to take an intensive course in German during the orientation session, which also provides an introduction to various facets of everyday life in Munich and the university system itself. Academic advising is provided with respect to course selection at the university and tutorials are offered as supplements to the university courses of study selected. As officially enrolled students of the university, program participants have all the benefits and privileges of their German counterparts, including access to subsidized cafeterias, fitness facilities, computer labs, student organizations, reduced fares on public transportation, and field trips organized by the international student office. A two-week Berlin field trip and seminar is offered by the program between semesters, combining lectures and workshops with visits to cultural institutions and sites of interest. Internships are available in Munich, especially in business organizations, journalism, the U.S. Consulate, local laboratories and hospitals. Housing is in dormitory accommodation. Eligibility: Fifth-semester German. At least 4 credits of coursework in European, preferably German, culture and history.
