MILAN:
Milan Program
The IES Milan Program is especially recommended for music performance
students who wish to combine the study of music with Italian studies
in a wide range of subjects. The program offers English-taught courses
for students with little or no background in Italian language and
coursework taught entirely in Italian, including the possibility
of study at an Italian university, for high-intermediate and advanced-level
students. IES provides opportunities for students to have musical
instruction in a number of outstanding institutions, including the
Civica Scuola di Musica, the Scuola Musicale G. Marziali, the Conservatorio
G. Verdi, the ICONS Academy in Novara and others. Instruction in
vocal and instrumental performance, composition, and orchestra may
be arranged for qualified students on the basis of auditions or
videotapes. Attending conservatory courses requires an application
forwarded an least one month prior to the IES application deadline.
In addition to intensive language study during the three-week orientation,
all beginning and low-intermediate students of Italian are immersed
in language through a mandatory nine-credit block of Italian, incorporating
the study of contemporary Italian life and culture. In addition
to language study, students select from area studies courses in
history, literature, art history, cinema, and political science.
Closely supervised internships are offered, which are designed to
incorporate the study of cultural differences and language through
immersion in the work environment of government agencies, not-for-profit
organizations and private enterprises. IES organizes field trips
as an integral part of the Milan program, taking participants to
sites throughout the city and to places further afield not easily
accessible through independent travel. Housing is provided in shared
apartments with Italian roommates. Eligibility: Course background
in European history and humanities recommended.
