LONDON:
Grinnell-in-London (fall)
The Grinnell-in-London program (GIL) is the college's branch campus
located in the heart of London, one of the world's most cultured,
diverse, and exciting cities. The program site itself, located in
the West End theatre district near the British Museum, has modern,
full-equipped classrooms, computer laboratory, audio-video facilities,
library and student lounges. The academic program offers courses
that may be used for major or cognate credit towards majors in a
number of departments. The semester is divided into two phases:
during the ten-week Phase 1, students earn 10-12 credits in three
or more courses, and in the five-week Phase II take one 4-credit
course, usually involving travel throughout Britain. During Phase
I, classes are held Monday through Thursday, allowing for three-day
weekends for exploring London, going on course-related fieldtrips
or doing academic fieldwork. Part of the GIL curriculum changes
annually to reflect the expertise of that year's participating Grinnell
faculty members while regular courses in social studies and the
humanities are taught each year by resident faculty in London. The
program offers two or three internships with Members of Parliament
and also sponsors a wide variety of extra-curricular activities
ranging from public interest groups to sports and music. Each student
receives memberships to the University of London Student Union,
a favorite gathering-place for British students as well as to the
International Students' House, an activity center for the large
and diverse international student population in London. All students
receive theatre tickets to eight West End productions and additional
events, films, dance, lectures and readings are regularly scheduled.
Housing is provided in fully furnished shared apartments or students
may elect to seek out their own accommodation. GIL provides a number
of subsidies to substantially reduce the cost of transatlantic airfare
and travel within London. All field trip and Phase II travel expenses
are fully covered. Eligibility: At least second-year student status.
