GERMANY: Freiburg (spring recommended)

IES Freiburg, a program designed for advanced-level students, is taught entirely in German and offers both semester and full-year options. The program begins with a three-week orientation session at the IES Freiburg Center, providing an introduction to the city of Freiburg, intensive instruction in German, guided tours and excursions. Regular semester classes at the Freiburg Center, specifically designed for the students on the program and taught by German faculty, are offered in the fields of German language and literature, art history, modern German history, political science, economics, and theatre. Students are also highly encouraged to enroll directly in classes at the Albert-Ludwigs University, subject to passing a language proficiency exam. Taking classes at the university is an integral part of program design at IES Freiburg, and students who do not score highly enough on the language exam to have access to the full range of regular university courses have the option of taking specialized language courses for foreigners and selected university courses with supporting tutorials. Each semester, program participants take a required German language class and four courses at either the Freiburg Center or the Albert-Ludwigs University or a combination of courses from the two. University courses are available in nearly all subject areas, and special tutorials in certain subjects can be arranged for groups of four or more students. An optional international university summer course is offered in August for advanced-level students who want to improve their German before the semester begins, featuring studies in German culture and society, literature and philosophy. IES organizes internships with political parties, government agencies, and advocacy groups, involving close supervision and bi-weekly support seminars. Volunteer opportunities are also available. Several field trips are offered, including one to Berlin in the fall and Eastern Germany in the spring, to such cities as Eisenach, Weimar, and Leipzig. Trips are also arranged to Frankfurt and Bonn as well as The Black Forest and Alsace. Spring-semester students studying drama may participate in the International Drama Festival scheduled at one of the other IES Centers, such as Paris. Accommodation is provided in co-ed German residence halls in singles, a shared room with an IES roommate or a suite arrangement with German students. Eligibility: Minimum of fifth-semester German for a single semester, fourth-semester for the full year. At least 4 credits of coursework in European, preferably German, culture and history.
