Florence:
Syracuse University School of Art and Design
The Syracuse University School of Art and Design in Florence draws
on the rich resources of local museums, architectural monuments,
and cultural offerings of the city and is noted for its wide-ranging
English-language curriculum in studio art as well as the liberal
arts and Italian language (required). Intended for advanced students
of studio art, the program features six credits of coursework in
drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, accompanied by courses
in art history and Italian language. (All applicants are required
to submit a portfolio consisting of 12 to 15 slides of recent work.)
These courses may be supplemented by additional options in the humanities
and social sciences, including literature, philosophy, religion,
history, political science, sociology, and women's studies. Each
course has its own field study component and a number of all-school
field trips are offered to such locations as Rome, Siena, Pisa,
Padua, and Ravenna. The program has a collection of 11,000 books
and reprints and a new digital imagine library based on fine arts
course content. Art studios are located in their own buildings within
easy walking distance of the main administrative and classroom center
on the centrally located Piazza Savanarola. Housing is provided
either in homestays or in shared apartments if the time commitment
to studio art precludes living with a family. Eligibility: Capability
for advanced work in studio art.
