Bristol:
University of Bristol (spring)
Firmly established as one of the premier universities in the United
Kingdom, the University of Bristol has an international reputation
for academic research and is particularly recommended for science
division students or those who wish to work on advanced projects
in the social sciences or humanities. Founded in 1876, Bristol has
an international student body of 12,000 students studying in more
than 60 academic departments and 15 research centers. The university
is ranked as one of the top ten universities in the UK, and many
of its departments in science, social studies, and humanities are
rated in the top five, along with Cambridge and Oxford. It was the
first university in England to admit women on an equal basis with
men and is now the most selective institution of higher education
in the UK in terms of the percentage of applicants granted admission.
Teaching consists of lectures and small group tutorials with a heavy
emphasis on independent study. The city of Bristol is the largest
urban area in the South West and is the leading regional center
for business, education and culture. Famous for its long history
of maritime trade with many parts of world and distinguished accomplishments
in engineering, the economic strength of the city today is founded
on financial services, aerospace industries, high technology, and
media. Bristol is distinguished by its Georgian architecture and
has more open space, parkland and woodland than any city in Britain;
it is within easy reach of London. Housing is provided in single
rooms in dormitories (with meal plans) or apartments with cooking
facilities. Eligibility: Minimum GPA of 3.4. Detailed plan of study.
