GERMANY:
Berlin (spring recommended)
IES Berlin, a program designed for advanced-level students, is taught
entirely in German and offers both semester and full-year options.
The program begins with a three-week orientation session at the
IES Berlin Center, which provides an introduction to the city of
Berlin, intensive instruction in German, and a series of lectures
on history, art and culture. All regular semester classes at the
Berlin Center are specifically designed for the students on the
program and are taught by German faculty; there is also the option
of enrolling directly in classes at the Humboldt University, subject
to passing a language proficiency exam. IES encourages all students
to take at least a portion of their courses at the university. Each
semester, program participants take a required German language class
and four courses at either the Berlin Center or Humboldt University
or a combination of courses from the two. IES area studies courses
are available in art history, business, cinema, economics, history,
literature, and politics. The university itself offers a very wide
range of classes in the humanities, social sciences, and natural
sciences. An optional pre- or post-session summer course is organized
by Humboldt University for students who wish to improve their German
and concentrate on special topics such as art in Berlin, modern
German history or drama. IES organizes internships in the arts,
education, social sciences, politics, mass media, theatre and business,
involving close supervision and bi-weekly support seminars. Volunteer
activities are also available. Several field trips are offered both
within Germany, to cities such as Dresden, Leipzig or Hamburg, and
to Vienna or the Baltic Hanse-cities. A major field trip is held
each semester to a former East Bloc state, usually to Cracow and
Warsaw in Poland in the fall and Moscow and St. Petersburg in the
spring. Each semester selected students studying the European Union
may participate in the Model European Union, which has been held
in both Freiburg and London. Spring semester students studying drama
may participate in the International Drama Festival scheduled at
one of the other IES Centers, such as Paris. Accommodation is provided
in homes and apartments with Germans throughout the city. Meals
are not generally included in the housing arrangements but cooking
facilities are provided. Eligibility: Minimum of fifth-semester
German for a single semester, fourth-semester for the full year.
At least 4 credits of coursework in European, preferably German,
culture and history.
