CHINA: Beijing
Program Institute for the International Education of Students
The IES Beijing program shares facilities with the Hydro-Ecology
Institute, Shui-Dian Guanli Xueyuan. Students combine intensive
language study at the intermediate level in small groups and with
individual tutors with academic work in Chinese area studies. Seminars
taught in English provide opportunities for original research and
field work. Internships are available in business and education,
involving a practicum of 10 hours per week. Volunteer opportunities
are available in such areas as secondary English teaching. Field
trips are an integral part of the program and incorporate extensive
travel to sites such as Yunnan Provice and Inner Mongolia. Students
maximize their cultural integration through living in a dormitory
with Chinese students or, for students with sufficient language
skills, through a homestay with a Chinese family. Eligibility: One
year of college-level Mandarin Chinese or the equivalent.
