KENYA:
WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT STUDIES
The School for Field Studies (SFS) program in Kenya focuses on the
search for ecologically appropriate solutions to the conflict between
food production for Kenya's rapidly increasingly numbers of people
and the long-term viability of its irreplaceable wild animal populations.
A wide selection of classes is offered in wildlife ecology and management,
socio-political issues in sustainable development, and environmental
policy. Students are taught by both resident faculty and local experts,
including wildlife researchers, government officials, resource mangers,
and local professors. Courses are built around interdisciplinary
case studies focusing on local environmental problems and feature
a combination of lectures, field study, and research. There are
four courses: Techniques of Wildlife Management; Wildlife Ecology,
Environmental Policy and Socioeconomic Values; and Directed Research.
Every student completes and presents an individual directed research
project. Students are housed in a rustic base-camp, located on a
game ranch on the high plains forty minutes from Nairobi, which
is fully equipped for group living and studying. Involvement with
indigenous communities is offered on numerous field trips to the
various regions of Kenya. Eligibility: At least one course in environmental
studies or biology highly recommended. Commitment to understanding
environmental issues. Willingness to live and work in groups.
