KENYA: MINNESOTA STUDIES IN INTL DEVELOPMENT
The Minnesota Studies in International Development (MSID) program
in Kenya focuses on problems of development and social change through
grassroots internships in poor communities. Eight weeks of classroom
in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, are followed by five weeks (fall)
or eleven weeks (spring) in a field placement and a week-long final
seminar. The longer spring semester (21 weeks, from mid-January
to mid-June) permits an internship of greater depth than the 15-week
fall semester. Course topics include theories and topics of development,
cross-cultural seminar, national and regional history, economics,
and culture. Field study placement categories include public health,
education environmental protection, social services, women in development,
agriculture, and small business, involving a minimum commitment
of 30 hours a week. Students study intensive Swahili, the predominant
ethnic language of Kenya, during the first phase of the program.
Content courses are taught in English. Housing is in homestays with
local families. Eligibility: At least one course each in global
development studies and African studies highly recommended
