Targeting Institutional Change--Quality Undergraduate Science
Education for All Students
Grinnell College sent a delegation
composed of the Dean, Science Division Chair, Director of the
Science Learning Center and astudent to this conference to participate
in national level discussions of different models of integrating
research and education and to receive the NSF award on behalf
of the college.
Roundtable Symposium: April Dialogue--sponsored by the Council
for Undergraduate Research
James E. Swartz, Dean of the
College and AIRE Principal Investigator, gave a talk at the conference
on the experiences of the various science departments in revising
course curricula and pedagogies in a move away from the traditional
lecture approach to discovery-based, interactive and collaborative

AIRE Project Director's Meeting
On June 24-25, 1999, the National
Science Foundation hosted an AIRE Project Director's meeting at
its headquarters in Washington, D.C. James Swartz, Bruce Voyles,
and David Lopatto were participants for the integration of research
and education and effective strategies for evaluation and dissemination.
