Minutes of Executive Council Meeting
January 24, 2001

This was the second special meeting of the Executive Council convened for further discussion of long-range academic planning.

The meeting came to order at 4:22 p.m. at the Ricker House.

Present: President Osgood, Dean Swartz, B. Ferguson, R. Grey, K. Kamp, T. Moore, B. Voyles, D. Clay, D. Caulkins, J. Brand, P. Smith.

R. Grey reported that the faculty of the Executive Council recognize the valuable role of members of the Dean's Office and extend the invitation to participate in Executive Council discussions to Doug Caulkins, Interim Associate Dean, as well as re-affirming the invitation to Paula Smith, Associate Dean and to Jonathan Brand, Secretary to the College and Special Assistant and Counsel to the President.

President's Remarks

President Osgood reported that three candidates for the position of Vice President for Development had interviews on campus last week.

Dean's Remarks

The Dean reported that the following tenure-track faculty positions have been filled:

Anthropology: J. Montgomery Roper, B.A. Ithaca College; M.A. University of Kentucky; Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh
Computer Science: Ben Gum, B.S./B.A. Washington University; Ph.D. (in progress) Princeton University
Physics: Brian Borovsky, B.A. St. Olaf College; Ph.D. University of Minnesota - Minneapolis
Political Science: David Ellison, B.A., M.A. University of Denver; Ph.D. University of California - Los Angeles

He also reported that several departmental proposals under the auspices of the Faculty Diversity Initiative will be ready for consideration by Council next week.

M. Pillado-Miller joined the meeting at 4:38 p.m.

Long-Range Academic Planning

The meeting moved to a general discussion of long-range academic planning. Topics included the role of faculty scholarship as part of the college's mission; the effects of internal and external funding as stimulation, support, and reward for development of curricular and scholarly projects; the search for better ways to coordinate the multitude of speakers and events on campus; and an overview of the structure of academic programs, course enrollments, and the liberal arts curriculum.

President Osgood adjourned the meeting at 7:04 p.m.
