Dean's Remarks

The Dean stated that Frank Thomas, Diversity Officer, has noted that there is a fair amount of confusion among department chairs about the "additive" positions which are proposed in the new Diversity Statement. The Dean asked Division Chairs to talk with their department chairs so they are better informed. There was a lengthy discussion of the criteria to be used in the process of selecting an anticipated subset of departmental proposals.

B. Voyles moved, M. Pillado Miller seconded, approval of the recommendation for appointment to the Libraries' open position of Public Services Librarian at the rank of assistant professor. The motion was approved.

The Dean noted a concern regarding family weekend. The reception was poorly attended by faculty and the representation of students, who are not in the science division, in the poster session was very poor. He asked Council to think about how to change the process of presentation of research by students in order to make it more representative-perhaps other presentation formats. A lengthy discussion ensued.

The Dean announced that the Anthropology Department position description had been approved by Council via email vote.

Discussion of Council Agenda Items for 2000-01

A lengthy discussion ensued.

The meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.

Secretary
Karen Wiese
