Minutes of the Meeting of the Executive Council
April 25, 2001

The meeting came to order at 4:20 p.m. in the Nollen House Conference Room. The minutes and excerpts from the 4/18/01 meeting were approved.

President's Remarks

The President noted that the College had received a proposal from Herbert Lewis Kruse & Blunck for the design of the Welcome/Admissions Center which was approved on Monday. Contractors have started grading the athletic fields. There was a brief discussion of housing in Grinnell.

The President reported on the development of a new initiative with the Hewlett Foundation following a recent meeting with Paul Brest, new President. The discussion surrounds the Foundation's interest in assessing liberal arts education in the United States.

Dean's Remarks

The Dean updated Council on the status of faculty searches.

The first weekend in May a group of Grinnell faculty will be travelling to Chicago to meet with their Oberlin counterparts to continue planning an implementation grant for submission to the Mellon Foundation for consideration under their Faculty Career Enhancement initiative.

Discussion of Proposals for Faculty Positions

There was very lengthy and animated discussion of the departmental proposals for faculty positions in biology, economics, English, history, geography, Japanese, music, psychology, and statistics.

B. Grey noted that next week Council will have a proposed mission statement for consideration which has been prepared by a subcommittee appointed by Council.

The Dean noted that next week Carol Trossett will review for Council departmental progress on learning assessment plans.
