Minutes of the Meeting of the Executive Council
March 17, 1999
Excerpts

Present: Dean Swartz, Associate Deans H. Scott and P. Smith, E. Dobbs, M. Pillado-Miller, L. Sinnett, D. Smith, B. Voyles, Kathy Kamp, Chair of the Faculty Organization Committee

The Dean called the meeting to order at 4:20 p.m. in Nollen House.

Discussion of Changes Proposed by the Faculty Organization Committee

Kathy Kamp, Chair of the Faculty Organization Committee, distributed and initiated a discussion about a document prepared by FOC recommending a revamping of part of the faculty committee structure. The change is designed to produce more effective and streamlined structure. The two new committees described in the document are the Instructional Support Committee and the Scholarship Selection Committee. The Instructional Support Committee would be responsible for supporting teaching initiatives and ensuring that issues are addressed concerning adequate support for teaching from the library, bookstore, audio-visual center, and computer center. This new committee would replace at least six existing committees: Library and Bookstore Committee, Faculty Development Committee, Academic Computing Committee, Mellon/Culpeper Steering Committee, Noyce Award Committee, and Residential Computing Committee. The Scholarship Selection Committee would combine many of the existing scholarship committees into a single committee. FOC will bring this recommendation to the full faculty at the April 5 Faculty Meeting.

Kamp left the meeting at 5:08 p.m.

Minutes of the March 3 meeting were corrected and approved.
