CONCERNED BLACK STUDENTS was originally founded in 1967 by the black brothers and sisters of Grinnell College who felt it necessary to bind themselves in a collective effort to fight the racist attitudes which persisted within the town. However, once banded together, these black pioneers began to sense other needs of black students in an all-white, isolated community to which their organization could address itself. Thus, after the physical battles with the town had long been settled, Concerned Black Students remained as a viable body dedicated to the survival of black students on Grinnell's campus.

Concerned Black Students today plays an active role in the college community. In an effort to expand awareness of black contributions and potentialities among black students as well as the entire Grinnell community, CBS strives to maintain its stance as a viable body and to guarantee the survival of black students on Grinnell's campus both academically as well as culturally.
