INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introductory survey of the four fields of Anthropology: the study of human nature.  We will cover: (1) Biological Anthropology -- the study of human evolution and biological adaptations; (2) Archaeology -- the study of prehistoric human societies in the context of cultural evolution; (3) Linguistics -- the study of the evolution and functions of human language systems, as the foundation of human culture; and (4) Cultural Anthropology -- the comparative study of human social and cultural adaptations.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Exams (20% each):  Three exams and a final will be given during the semester. If you are happy with your grades on the exams, you do not have to take the cumulative final!  If you elect to take the final, your lowest exam score (of the 4) will be dropped.  However, you MUST take all three regular exams.  Exams will be primarily short essay questions.  Make-up exams are given only in cases of extreme emergency, e.g, hospitalization.  Dates: 21FEB, 04APR, 07MAY

Cumulative Final: Thursday, May 15, 2pm

 

Writing Assignments:

1) Skeletal/Fossil Cast Comparison & Write-up (10%): A 2-4 page comparison and discussion of similarities/differences between 2-3 specimens from the skeleton and fossil cast collection. 

Due: 03MAR

2) Cross-Cultural Research (25%): A 5-7 page cross-cultural research paper using the e-HRAF database with a hypothesis, predictions, data collection, and write-up.  Due: 30APR

 

Class Participation/Attendance (5%): You are expected to attend regularly and participate in class discussions.  I TAKE ATTENDANCE.
